Home » DIRECTED ALIGNMENT TECHNIQUE

Directed Alignment Technique (DAT) is a gentle neural release method that is used to relieve aches and pains as well as to enhance and improve general health and well being.

Body alignment practitioners are able to restore balance to the neural pathways and channel communication to the blocked areas by use of a gentle and safe hands-on technique. This is achieved by subtle touch to specific neural access points along the neck and spinal regions. By using this technique the practitioners are able to locate the source of the imbalance thereby assisting the body in releasing adverse tension and restoring Neural Balance.

The primary focus of DAT is to improve the function of one’s nervous system. One’s nervous system suffers a penalty every time the conditions of everyday life become too much for it to process or cope with. As a result the brain and nervous system becomes overwhelmed and disorganised.

Body alignment practitioners can restore the body’s ability to heal and maintain the natural God-given right to good health, a balanced nervous system and emotional well being. In essence DAT aims to stabilise and achieve a natural harmonious balance for the body to operate efficiently and effectively.

DAT is not to be confused or misinterpreted as a diagnosis or treatment for specific conditions or diseases. It is a useful and beneficial treatment that safely and effectively releases stress and adverse tension.

Understanding the effects of tension

A certain amount of tension is necessary to stimulate the body and motivate one to change a situation or strive to reach one’s potential.

However, when everyday stress accumulates and becomes trapped in the body it becomes adverse tension. This type of stress reduces one’s ability to recover from emotional and physical overload. Our neural balance is constantly disturbed by the need to adapt to ever-changing internal and external forces in the environment. Further stress is added by adverse physical, mental, emotional, chemical and genetic tension.

The different types of tension

Physical tension manifests in a variety of ways:

  • bad posture
  • sitting in front of a computer or TV
  • lack of exercise
  • incorrect exercise
  • disturbed sleeping patterns
  • lack of rest
  • overwork
  • trauma caused by incidents such as falls, car accidents or lifting heavy objects or weights

Mental and emotional tension manifests in the body in different ways. Warning signs often appear in a tightening of the muscles in the jaw, neck, shoulders and the diaphragm. The body is unconsciously trying to create a body armour to protect one from the impact of daily stress. This physical discomfort can lead to negative emotions and creates a vicious cycle that repeats itself if intervention does not occur.

Mental and emotional tension is often caused by:

  • financial problems
  • family
  • work issues
  • panic attacks
  • depression
  • shock and trauma
  • anger

Emotions can play havoc with the spine. It is both useful and interesting to reflect on what has been happening emotionally in one’s life when one puts one’s back out. Worry creates a build-up of adverse tension that strains the motor nervous system. This causes stiff over-strained muscles, resulting in pain.

Emotional stress can cause the autonomic nervous system to malfunction. One feels ‘tied up in knots’, which can lead to immune, circulatory, hormonal and digestive problems.

Chemical tension is caused by exposure to toxins in the environment. This can result in a severely upset nervous system and a  tightening of neck muscles. Chemical tension includes:

  • car fumes, insecticides and other substances that are inhaled
  • household chemicals and cosmetics absorbed through the skin
  • food additives, for example MSG
  • dental work, for example mercury fillings
  • too much sugar

These factors combined with a poor diet compounded by fast foods, fats, salt and alcohol as well as the insufficient intake of fresh green vegetables, fruit and high quality protein, can cause a deterioration of health and weaken the body’s defences.

Chronic genetic problems create a tension that results in issues such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and  heart attacks.

Experiencing a DAT consultation

What to expect when meeting with your practitioner for the first time

During the first appointment the practitioner takes a detailed case history and makes a visual assessment. As the fully clothed client lies in a face-down position on a specially designed bed, the practitioner does a thorough assessment to locate visible areas of tension.

DAT uses the legs to help determine where in the spine the adverse tension is located, but it also uses visual indicators such as muscle tightness to confirm areas of adverse tension.

What to expect from a treatment

Directed Alignment Technique is performed in the following manner:
Based on the findings of the practitioner’s assessment, gentle and specific contacts are made along spine.
The tension is then released with gentle but firm pressure. If the stress is long-standing, then more releases will be needed to ensure that the protective layers of muscle can relax back to their normal state.

Some clients experience slight disorientation afterwards, but a short walk around the room soon corrects that feeling.
Upon completion of a course of treatments, negative energy is released and the client experiences the release of pain and discomfort and enjoys a renewed sense of wellness. This, in turn, enables the system to maintain optimum health.

DAT is not a quick fix and most people enjoy regular weekly or monthly treatments to keep their bodies free from accumulated tension.

Although the treatments are painless, some people may feel tender after the first release because different muscles, nerves and or soft-tissues will have been stimulated.

Who would benefit from DAT?

Everyone from new-born infants to senior citizens will benefit from this natural pain-relieving technique.

Infants and children

Some babies are born with a stressed nervous system which are damaged by constricted development in the womb or a traumatic, stressful birth.  New-born babies presenting with colic, allergies or babies who cry for no apparent reason can be effectively balanced by a Directed Alignment Practitioner.

Our Practitioners have helped babies as young as three days old to overcome traumatic births. Significant results have been obtained from these proven, gentle, safe and effective treatments.

The greater the medical intervention during birth,  the greater the stress on the mother and baby. Because the baby’s nervous system is still forming it is easily affected by stress, making the baby prone to conditions such as colic, reflux, feeding difficulties and irritability – all of which can give both baby and parents sleepless nights. Generally these problems are considered normal because they are so common, however, they are not.  During the gentle DAT treatments, the baby lies on the mother’s chest where it feels relaxed and secure.

DAT is also helpful for:

  • young children with bed-wetting (enuresis) problems
  • sore legs, (growing pains)
  • those who demand constant attention
  • children who bruise easily
  • eat too much sugar and fast foods
  • live in stressful families and environments
  • hyperactive children
  • and those with ADHD

Teenagers who are experiencing problems of growing up and making the right decisions respond well to this treatment.

At DAT we empower them to overcome their difficulties so they can mature into healthy, vital and inspiring adults.
